What is National Pretzel Day?

First, we’d like to take a quick moment and explain National Pretzel Day. It came about in 2003 when then Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell announced it for the first time. Places like Pittsburgh, PA, have been mega hubs for producing pretzels since Prohibition, but pretzels have become staple bar food with good beer all across America.

The first pretzels were made by Catholic monks in the 7th century as a way to withstand the heavy fasting they did during the penitential season of Lent. It was one of the only things they could eat since meat was completely off-limits. After a while, pretzels became very popular throughout Medieval Europe.

Oftentimes, pretzels (“knotted bread”) were used at weddings to symbolize marital union. They were also given to the poor as a form of material and even spiritual food.

Here are some other fun facts about pretzels:

  • The U.S. pretzel business produces more than half a billion dollars in revenue annually.
  • The average American eats roughly a pound-and-a-half of pretzels every year.
  • Hard pretzels didn’t arrive until 1850.
  • Pennsylvania accounts for 80% of the country’s pretzel production.
