Join McGrath’s for St. Paddy’s Day in Lakewood Ranch

St. Patrick’s Day is on the horizon and McGrath’s Irish Ale House is looking forward to making it even happier by celebrating this memorable tradition. We bring our readers a barrel of fun facts about St. Patrick’s Day to the table that many people, Irish or not, don’t already know about.

1. Saint Patrick’s Day doesn’t go as far back as the beginning of time in America. The first St. Patrick’s Day celebration in the United States was recognized in Boston in the year 1737.

2. Since St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday in Ireland, banks, stores, and businesses close for the day out of respect for this revered event.

3. The national flower/emblem of Ireland is none other than the well-known shamrock.

4. Believe it or not, the official color of St. Patrick’s Day was originally blue. Wearing green has become customary on  St. Patrick’s Day, but the holiday was originally connected with the color blue. It is said that the switch to a green hue occurred as a result of Ireland’s nickname “The Emerald Isle,” the green shade in the Irish flag and the shamrock. Green ribbons and shamrocks were sported by people to show their national pride as early as the 17th century.

5. Beer is a widely consumed beverage on St. Patrick’s Day and Guinness ranks as one of the most requested beers of choice.

6. The legend behind the clover is that each leaf represents a certain meaning. The leaves depict Hope, Faith, Love, and Luck. The odds of ever happening upon a four-leaf clover are approximately 1 in 10,000. Wow…those odds aren’t too promising!

7. The city of Chicago pigmented its river green for St Patrick’s Day for the very first time in 1962. The city continues this tradition by coloring the river green every St. Patrick’s Day for a few hours.

8. St. Patrick wasn’t Irish at all!  He was born in Britain around A.D. 390 into a noble Christian family.

9. The world’s most compact St. Patrick’s Day parade is held in an Irish village. It only spans 100 yards that exist between the village’s two pubs.
